Mrs. Burke (Formerly Ms. Flugstad):
This is my sixth year working at Bell Elementary School as a 5th-8th grade Learning Specialist. For the last five years I have worked with many of the students from 5th-8th grade, and I am excited to continue our hard work. My role at Bell consists of working in the general education setting for co-teaching support, as well as a small group resource setting in which individualized and small group instruction leads to student success. I am looking forward to a year in which we all keep a Growth Mindset involved as we step outside of our boundaries and challenge ourselves to find unique educational journeys.
Prior to moving to Chicago I grew up in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. Then my degree in education began at Iowa State University (Go Cyclones)! My teaching career brought me to Chicago and I have worked in two CPS schools since moving to this wonderful city. On my time out of school I enjoy traveling, learning new languages, enjoying the unique food choices in the city, and meeting new people. In the summers I like to travel abroad. The last few places that I have explored have been Nicaragua, Italy, Greece, Dubai, the Maldives, Iceland, England, Scotland, and Ireland. I am not sure what is next on my list. Maybe Africa or New Zealand. Any suggestions!?
About 2 years ago I started a new adventure; marriage! My maiden name was Flugstad and my new last name is Burke (yes, very Irish)! It was a bit of a transition, but I am honored to take a new family name and will encourage the community at Bell school to help me with the transition as Mrs. Burke!
I look forward to continuing to develop more as a person and professional with every new experience that comes my way in life and at Bell. I look forward to the 2018-2019 school year and working with all of the wonderful Bell families!
With Kind Regards,
-Mrs. Burke
